My final day started with an early morning at Cataloochee Valley. I've been here a few times over the years and it never disappoints. If you time it right, you'll likely see Elk and I did! Getting to the entrance road that morning delivered some beautiful fall foliage. Once the paved road ends, the rest of the 11 mile drive into the valley will be on a single lane, winding gravel road. It's also steep with no guard rails. Oh, and I found bigfoot this morning too!

The morning light was fantastic and I enjoyed taking a few moments to enjoy the magic of the eastern side of the Smokies. One of the first old structures that you will come across is the Palmer Chapel, built in 1903.
I didn't have to drive much further before coming across dozens of photographers and I knew...Elk! I pulled over and joined in. There were a couple of park rangers there, making sure we stayed our distance. I arrived at the end, but briefly saw these 2 male bull elk challenging each other during fall rut.
Lastly, I visited the Caldwell House and for the first time, I went inside. I didn't visit any of the other structures during my visit and from here, left to my next stop at Soco Falls. Hopefully, you've already enjoyed my 8 Waterfalls in 3 Days blog post.
