Somehow I managed to wake this morning at 4:55 am, 5 minutes before my alarm was set to go off! I haven't been to the Everglades since 2013, so I guess I was just excited. I have recently been thinking about making a trip out there and then everything just fell into place this week. A couple of my coworkers sent me an email that they were planning to go and then another friend posted on Facebook that he too was heading out there to shoot sunrise. So I made plans to meet up with everyone at Long Pine Key for sunrise.
It was a very foggy drive to the Everglades. I was hoping for fog, but I think maybe I hoped too much. Something that I didn't anticipate were the mosquitoes! They were vicious! I guess we no longer get breaks from the bugs, not even in our mild South Florida winter!
After shooting sunrise, my Facebook friend headed down to Flamingo and my coworkers and I headed to Anhinga Trail. If you've been following me long enough, you may remember that my last visit to Anhinga Trail in 2013 wasn't a good one. When I returned to my car after a fun morning of shooting with my daughter, we found at least a dozen buzzards all over the roof and hood of the SUV that I owned at the time. They had eaten my windshield wipers, pulled apart all the trim around the front windshield and had pooped all over my roof! Today I took no chances and I used the tarps and bungie cords that they have available there. I'm happy to say that after about an hour on the trail, I found my car safe and sound. It remained foggy while we were walking around the trail. Didn't see a lot of birds, but enough of a variety and some gators to make it worth my while. I also saw a Black Crowned Night Heron and a nest of Anhinga chicks, but I didn't have a long enough lens to capture them to share.
