On Saturday, my daughter's school ran in the Sam Burley Hall of Fame Invitational at Tropical Park. There were 43 schools who participated in this event, including schools from Dade, Broward, Naples and some from as far north as Orlando and Jacksonville! The meet started on Friday, but Kaley's events were only on Saturday.
We arrived a little before 9 am, but her first event didn't start until 11:30. Up first were the 100m hurdles. She was in the first heat and up against the number one girl in the US! If you've read through any of my past few blogs, you might remember the name Timetria Mitchell. Timetria is from Northwestern and she currently holds the #1 spot in the US in 100m hurdles with 13:65 seconds! Today she ran 14:05 seconds in this preliminary heat and she ended up taking first in the finals with a 13:86. Kaley took 4th place and came in 16th overall in this event out of 28 girls. She also improved her time over last week's meet by about 1/2 a second, running this one in 19:16 seconds.
I just want to mention here that if you look at her overall placement in both events, just comparing her to other freshman, Kaley took 3rd place in each event. She is also placing above her teammates. It's not easy to compete with so many top seniors. With only a few track meets under her belt, I do see a change in Kaley and she has the drive to improve and beat her previous times and perhaps one day...break a record.
There was a LONG break until her next event, the 300m hurdles. They called them out onto the track way too early, so Kaley said she felt tired and dehydrated by race time. With a long zoom lens, I found her in the middle of the track warming up and hanging out with her teammates.
Nonetheless, the event finally started around 2:20 pm! She was in Heat 1 again and up against some pretty fast competition. She placed 20th overall out of 33 girls in this event today. She ran it in 54.27 seconds, shaving almost 3 seconds off her time from last week's meet!
